Introduction to the Old Testament as Scripture is unavailable, but you can change that!

This introduction attempts to offer a different model for the discipline from that currently represented. It seeks to describe the form and function of the Hebrew Bible in its role as sacred scripture for Israel. It argues the case that the biblical literature has not been correctly understood or interpreted because its role as religious literature has not been correctly assessed.

The basic hermeneutical assumptions are shared by both left and right within the full spectrum of biblical scholarship. To determine the degree of a narrative’s historicity, whether slightly more or less, or to fix the age of a composition as somewhat older or younger, makes little difference in one’s total understanding of the literature.
